Eating Out Dieting Tips

Nuttrisystem Eating Out Dieting Tips
Eating Out Smart 8 diet-saving restaurant strategies

You’re losing weight on Nutrisystem, feeling better, and those formerly snug jeans are so baggy you need a smaller size. Now, you’ve been invited out to a business dinner or a Saturday date night…you don’t want to blow your diet or slow down the progress you’re making. Don’t worry! There are good options, if you think it through and play it smart.

1. Plan ahead. This is the most important thing you can do. If you know where you’re going to eat, check online. Many restaurants now post nutritional data; if information isn’t available online, give the restaurant a call. Find out if they have a to-go menu you can pick up or any light meal options. If possible, decide in advance what you want to order.

2. Don’t go hungry. If you know you’re going to be going out, it can be tempting to “bank” calories in advance. That’s not a good idea. Instead, stick as closely as you can to your Nutrisystem schedule. Be sure you eat your lunch salad and your afternoon fruit and protein serving. Going to a restaurant when you’re hungry is a set-up for trouble.

3. Watch the drinks. Having a few drinks not only adds empty calories; it also loosens your inhibitions and softens your resolve. If you want to drink, limit yourself to one, and make it something smart, like a light beer or a wine spritzer.

4. Be the portion police. Many restaurants today serve super-sized portions. One option is to order an appetizer as your entrée; this will save you money, as well as calories. If you do order an entrée, just eat half and get a “go” bag for the rest, or see if someone at the table would like to share the meal with you. Some restaurants will charge a nominal “sharing” fee, but the peace of mind you feel will be worth the extra cost.

5. Order smart. If you know the type of restaurant you’re going to, read through your Dining Out Guide for suggestions. Once you’re there, don’t be afraid to question items on the menu. Ask the server what a dish includes and how it’s prepared. You can also customize. Request sauces on the side; substitute a vegetable or salad for the potatoes.

6. Remove temptation. If your dining companions want the bread basket to stay on the table, move it as far away from you as you can. Also, as soon as you’ve finished eating, ask the server to remove your plate. This will keep you from mindless nibbling.

7. Redefine fullness. Eat slowly and give your stomach enough time to tell your brain you’re full (this takes about 20 minutes). As soon as you feel full, stop eating. You really don’t need to clean your plate.

8. Enjoy it! Appreciate being served; soak in the restaurant’s atmosphere. Realize you’re not the one who’s going to be cleaning up. For many people, eating out is a luxury, especially in this day and time; savor the experience!
